In my last blog post I talked about why it’s time to update your LinkedIn profile and gave you some tips on how to make your profile more effective. Now I am going to share with you my tips on how to use LinkedIn as a powerful networking tool.
Making likeminded connections is the core activity of LinkedIn and you should look to connect with people who work in your industry. Start by connecting with people you work with, work at your organisation, have worked with you previously or who you know already as they are likely to accept your invitation and are an easy way to start growing your network. When you send an invitation to connect with someone you don’t know personally, it is good etiquette to send a personalised message introducing yourself and stating why you want to connect. Remember that the person on the other end of that invitation has to accept it and they are more likely to do so if they know what they will get out of the connection.
LinkedIn is a social network and just like any other social network the best way to get the most out of the platform is to be active. Remember, this social network is about career and industry so share professional posts. This may include links to articles you have read, updates on your career, professional events and achievements or challenges at work.
Did you know that you can write articles on LinkedIn? If you don’t have your own blog then this is a great way to share professional and industry thoughts without having to maintain your own site. You can choose who sees your published articles by adjusting the visibility settings on your profile where there are a range of options including being able to share your articles publicly.
If you really want to get the most out of networking on LinkedIn then you need to start engaging with your network. Comment on other peoples posts and articles, ask questions, share your ideas – basically get involved. Commenting is a great way to keep fresh in the minds of your network and make sure you remain visible.
The best way to be visible on LinkedIn, or any social network, is to be active. The more active you are, the more opportunities you will see, and the more will come your way. Log in regularly and become part of the community.
I will be blogging more tips and tricks about how to get the most out of LinkedIn in the coming weeks so stay tuned!
