Gold Coast tips APLIC18

If you’re heading to the Gold Coast for the Asia-Pacific Library and Information Conference 2018 then you will want to make the most of your trip! The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (take a virtual tour here) is our venue for the conference and it is in the suburb of Broadbeach. The best website for all of your Gold Coast information is Destination Gold Coast, make sure you check out the Broadbeach neighbourhood guide.

Here are just a few tips that should make your visit to the Gold Coast easier:

Public Transport

If you’re travelling within the greater Gold Coast, from the Gold Coast airport, Brisbane airport or greater Brisbane then you will need to use the TransLink journey planner. We use a go card for electronic ticketing on buses, light rail and trains.

The Gold Coast Light Rail network is the best option for getting around the city from Broadbeach to Helensvale. They are reliable, safe, clean and run frequently. If you haven’t booked your accomodation yet then I suggest booking something along the tram line.

Tip! Broadbeach, Southport and Helensvale public libraries are on the tram line if you want to pop in for a visit.

If shopping is your thing then you will want to visit Pacific Fair at Broadbeach. Pac Fair is a 15-20 minute walk from the conference venue.

Tip! Pac Fair has a free shopping shuttle with pick up and drop off locations in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach and Nobby Beach.

If gaming and slot machines are your thing then head to The Star Casino to get your fix. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the conference venue.

Tip! There are some great dining options at The Star including a weekday dumpling Happy Hour at Mei Wei Dumplings.

The Gold Coast is know for its beautiful beaches and there are plenty of them to visit. You will be visiting in winter so it may be a bit chilly and windy but let’s be honest, we have very mild winters here, it’s Queensland after all! An easy 10 minute walk from the conference venue you will find the beautiful surfing spot Kurrawa Beach and the popular Kurrawa Surf Club which has just undergone a renovation.

Tip! A walk to Kurrawa Beach is a great way to escape conference chaos and return recharged.
